Urban Beginnings is a podcast co-hosted by practicing planners, Blair Czarecki and Rogelio Martinez. Influenced by their love for spaces and places and the people helping shape them, Urban Beginnings explores urban planning topics and their impact on communities. By uncovering noteworthy people, places, and events, Urban Beginnings elevates projects, issues, and initiatives shaping the field.

About the Hosts

Rogelio Martinez, MUP

With a background in construction, Rogelio began his career as a Permit Specialist for Traffic Management, Inc. He continued his career as a Permit Specialist for the City of Santa Monica, later transitioning to a Planner position for the Kern County Planning Department. Currently, Rogelio serves the City of Bakersfield as a Planner specializing in Affordable Housing for the Economic and Community Development Department.


Rogelio earned his Bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies and Planning at California State University Northridge, and his Master’s in Urban Planning at the University of Southern California, Sol Price School of Public Policy.

Blair Czarecki, MUP, MFA

With a passion for the built environment, Blair began her urban planning journey in an atypical way, beginning with a Master of Fine Art in Interior Design from Parsons School of Design in New York. Determined to elevate her practice and impact, Blair earned her Master’s in Urban Planning at the University of Southern California, Sol Price School of Public Policy.


For over a decade Blair worked in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco designing and implementing intergenerational community programs at affordable housing sites. Merging her passion for design, creativity, and sustainability with community work, over the last 2 years she has served as a Project Manager for several modest and large-scale capital improvement and public space projects in San Francisco and Sacramento region.
